What cat litter actually costs per month
Price per bag tells you almost nothing. What matters is price per pound multiplied by how many pounds your cat actually goes through. Here is the honest math for tofu, clay, crystal and pine — including where huloo huloo is more expensive than clay, and why some households still switch.

Where clay still wins on price
We are not going to pretend otherwise: on raw dollars per month, budget clumping clay is the cheapest way to keep a litter box. If the only number that matters to you is the receipt, clay wins.
- Clay is roughly a third of the price per pound because it is mined and shipped in bulk.
- A 40 lb bag from a big-box store has no shipping cost baked in if you drive it home yourself.
- Clay clumps hard and predictably, and most cats accept it without any transition period.
- Pine pellets are cheap per pound too, but they break down into sawdust, so you refill far more often and need a sifting box.
- Subscription crystal litters land the other way: a 3.5 lb bag at $23–$25 a month works out to around $6.50 per pound, well above tofu.
The costs that do not show up on the receipt
The reason households still move to tofu is that the monthly gap narrows once you count what clay costs you outside the price tag: 28 lb of dead weight to carry every month, fine dust settling on the floor around the box, litter tracked through the house, and a full box dump that goes into the trash. Competitor figures are category price ranges observed across major US pet retailers in early 2026 and standard manufacturer usage guidance — not claims about any single brand.
